With sustainability currently at the forefront of most peoples' minds, climate action is going on all around us, right now, just as chemistry is also going on all around you, right now.
We also cover a lot of "everyday" occurrences that can be understood through chemistry, such as the color of something when it's burning - it's not always orange!
I've been teaching chemistry at Santa Monica College since 2002. Since 2012, I've taught a chemistry course designed for non-majors students; it introduces sustainability-related topics (such as climate change, renewable energy, ocean acidification) through the lens of chemistry. Because of environmental concerns are continually evolving and also tied to the social and political climates, there's always something new to learn or consider.
