Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava or Sharodotsava, is an annual Hindu festival originating in the Indian subcontinent which reveres and pays homage to the Hindu goddess Durga and is also celebrated because of Durga's victory over Mahishasur. Durga Puja is an annual festival celebrated in September or October, most notably in Kolkata, but also the entire West Bengal of India . It is particularly popular and traditionally celebrated in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Tripura, and the country of Bangladesh. Durga Puja has made its place in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is the first Asian festival to receive prestigious recognition.
