The Rape of the Lock is a mock-heroic narrative poem composed by Alexander Pope. It takes its subject matter from real people. Belinda (based on Arabella Fermor) loses her beautiful lock of hair at the hands of the Baron (based on Lord Petre) at a party at Hampton Court. Both belong to the high class society of 18th century England. This incident becomes the cause of tension and tantrum in the poem, and what ensues next is a BATTLE... just a mock-epic one.
Enjoy this high burlesque and do not take it very seriously, as Pope himself said.
