Boris Johnson has announced the government will disclose its roadmap out of a lockdown at the end of February, revealing a phased approach will be used.

Schools will be the government’s top priority for reopening. The prime minister said he hopes pupils will be back at schools from 8th March at the earliest.

The government’s lockdown approach is connected with its vaccination programme. By 15th February ministers believe the top four vulnerable groups will be vaccinated. These people make up 88% of coronavirus deaths, and once the vaccine comes into effect a few weeks after being administered, these people should be safe from severe cases of COVID-19. Once coronavirus deaths and cases fall significantly a phased approach will be taken to lifting lockdown restrictions.

According to newspaper reports, the prime minister is preparing to reintroduce the tiers system across England, starting out with the whole of the country in Tier 4, which is similar to the current national lockdown. As the pandemic shrinks local areas will go down the tier system over the spring months into the summer. Pubs and restaurants will be open with social distancing rules in place, and the rule of six, and then all other non-essential shops will be allowed to trade again.

Hopes that Britain might start ending lockdown when the government hits its 15th February vaccination goal were dampened by the prime minister’s statement today. The news comes as Britain reported over 100,000 deaths from coronavirus since the pandemic began on Tuesday.
