Once considered only a barren desert, Saudi Arabia has a huge archaeological treasure in its north-western region particularly lava fields of Harrat Khaybar and Harrat Uwayrid.

Commonly known as Stone Structures, researchers have categorized these archaeological treasures as Gates, Desert Kites, Wheels, Triangles, Mustatils and Bull’s Eyes according to their shapes.

These mysterious stone structures date back thousands of years in the Arabian desert, which researches believe have been built by nomadic tribes which can’t be seen very well from the ground level, but they stand out beautifully from the air, a few hundred feet above the ground level.

The dry stone-built structures comprising long walls ending in an enclosed area were first discovered in the 1920s when World War I pilots flying over the Levantine and northern Saudi deserts reported seeing constructions resembling polygons, funnels, and triangles.

Researchers have various theories on the purpose of these structures, some believing them to be villages or traps for herding animals, while others consider them to have been burial grounds or tombs. Some others believe that these are centuries old highway network lined with ancient tombs.

Another study states that these are structures of traps and graves which resemble the Phoenicians’ graves in Palestine who worshipped the deer and buried it with the dead who were laid to rest in a squatting position that’s directed towards the sunrise.

The graves are primarily pendant-shaped or ring-shaped. The researchers employed radiocarbon dating to discover a concentrated set of materials dating from 2600 to 2000 BC.

Researchers also studied Mustatils (rectangular shaped structures) made from sandstone blocks and date them to about 7,000 years ago, making them millennia older than Stonehenge or the Pyramids at Giza

These structures exist in varying sizes, the longest gate measures more than half a kilometer, while the shortest is just 13 meters and the spaces between them differing from miles apart to “almost touching.”
