Steve breaks down this Unrestored 1969 Chevrolet Yenko Camaro that will be auctioned off by Richmond Auctions Oct 24-25. You can register at bid.richmondauctions.com. Here is a description of this lot:
As the first Gen Camaro entered its third model year, some performance-minded dealers, including Don Yenko, figured a way past Chevrolet's corporate mandate of limiting 400-plus cubic inch engines from factory getting installed in factory-built Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas. Known as COPO (Central Office Production Orders), Chevy was able to assemble a limited run of factory 427 Camaros for 1969, and the Yenko Chevy franchise was on the cutting edge of making that happen. This great example has the 450 horsepower L-72 427 cubic-inch V8 engine and Muncie M-21 four-speed manual transmission with Posi traction rear axle, J52 power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes, heavy-duty front and rear suspension with leaf springs, and live rear axle. It's an incredible all-original survivor with just 26,000 miles that has the legendary Yenko DNA and performance exclusivity. It's just one of 201 produced for 1969, and only 57 were painted in Fathom Green. This COPO 9561 Camaro (L-72 427 iron engine) was delivered with a standard 4.10 Code BE 12-bolt live rear axle, heavy-duty suspension, J52 power disc/rear drum brakes, and 14x7-inch stamped steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. Also included was the ZL2 cowl induction hood, dual rear exhausts, Code 711 black vinyl bucket seat interior, and a 140-mph speedometer. The Yenko dealership 'would install the distinctive graphics in 3M black or white vinyl (reportedly local youths were paid $5 per car to install the graphics), a D80 front spoiler (and optional Z/28 rear spoiler), 427 and Yenko exterior emblems, Stewart-Warner auxiliary gauges and a 7,000-rpm tachometer, a center-mounted fuel gauge and Code YH 15x7 Rally Wheels or optional Atlas 5-spoke mags on which were mounted. The condition of this Yenko Camaro is excellent, as the underbody and chassis are original and with no evidence of restoration. The rear differential and related components have been repainted; otherwise, the floorpans are clean but not restored. The front steering linkage is original and unrestored but clean, and evidence of callouts and stickers remains, and the chassis is well preserved and original. The 427 big block appears to be original with correct-appearing broach marks and is equipped with the proper Holley four-barrel carburetor. The engine compartment, while not restored, has been cleaned. It is equipped with its original headers, radiator, and master cylinder. The inner fenders, firewall, and core support have not been painted. This is a wonderfully preserved Camaro and an iconic piece of muscle car history that would most definitely be the centerpiece of any American muscle car collection. With only about 26,010 miles showing, it is presumed to be one of the lowest-mileage all-original Yenko Super Cars known to exist and will provide its new owner with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the most vaunted vehicles of the muscle car era. VIN: 124379N579776.
