Melchior Schildt was organist in Hannover (among other places) where his family came from, and he was one of the many North German organists who studied with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam.

Schildt was an unusual character. Very few of his works are still extant, but those that survive are highly idiosyncratic and unique, including a setting of the Magnificat Primi Toni over twenty minutes in length, with an elaborate and highly virtuosic chorale fantasia verset which makes extensive use of rapid echo passages, and a chromatic verset as well. It is theorized that this work was likely part of a now-lost complete magnificat cycle by Schildt. A popular anecdote recounts an incident in which Schildt allegedly physically attacked the organbuilder Gottfried Fritzsche in an organ loft. The circumstances surrounding this altercation are curiously unknown. Before his death, Schildt ordered that his sons were forbidden from studying music, as it would lead to a "dissolute life."

This praeambulum is perhaps one of Schildt's more unremarkable works, but it is well-designed, making use of clever voice leading and rhetorical figures.
