Israel and the PLO said on Tuesday (19/9) that some progress had
been achieved towards an agreement over Palestinian self-rule
after another night of talks in the Egyptian resort of Taba on the
Red Sea. The main stumbling block to the latest round of talks,
which began on Saturday evening (16/9), is the future of the West
Bank city of Hebron. The Palestinian city is home to around 400
Israeli settlers living among some 120,000 Palestinians. The PLO
demands that Israel withdraw its troops from the city but Israel
say that the security forces are necessary to safeguard their
nationals. Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said the two
sides have drafted a joint position paper on Hebron outlining both
stances and were now trying to paper over the gaps.
