A breath of nostalgia! Here you can relive some of the atmosphere from the past with houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
In Gamle Bergen, the whole family can experience life in the "old days". Here you can stroll and look in the houses, feed the birds, climb the trees and not least visit the Regens family in 1826. Short plays are performed here, and in between it all the children can join in the fun and games. Scones, ice cream and soft drinks are sold in the museum kiosk.

History Old Bergen
Bergen in the 19th century
In the 19th century, Bergen was Europe's largest wooden city, a distinctive urban environment with dense wooden housing, busy streets, squares and alleys. At Gamle Bergen open-air museum you can look into windows, open doors and enter exhibitions and historic interiors. Inside the doors there are signs with brief information about the houses' history. Both outside and inside, actors contribute to the revitalization and provide some answers to how life might have been in the city one or two centuries ago. Several times a day you can experience short plays performed in the square by actors; alias Bergen citizens from certain historical years.

Old Bergen will become a museum
The museum was opened in 1949 and is built around the pleasure spot "Elsesro" that the shipbuilder Rasmus Rolfsen built for his wife Elsebe. The property was in the Rolfsen family's ownership from 1784 to 1903. Here the family built a shipyard and pleasure grounds, later also parks following the patterns of the old English gardens. Stiftelsen Gamle Bergen eventually succeeded in establishing the museum as a "rescue haven" for Bergen's older houses at risk of demolition, and the houses that stand in the museum today came here between 1945 and 1981. The outdoor museum today has 55 wooden houses, most of which originally had stood in the center of Bergen.
