I made this process video with time-lapse documenting my experience with dyeing my plain, white cotton slip dress with alcohol ink. I love the spontaneity of throwing ink onto the fabric without knowing how it would turn out.

Cotton responds quite differently than silk. Biggest thing I want you to know: expect to use ample everything. Ink, alcohol. It all gets soaked up with this porous material.

Cotton holds a lot of dye so in the washing process you'll probably need a good few rinses to fully get the majority of the run-off expelled. It might be surprising but know that this is a natural part of any dye wash, whether synthetic or eco.

I loved seeing how these gorgeous bursts of surprising colour came to life. A beautiful tie dye moment. Giving me elevated and understated bohemian summer energy.

alcohol ink
isopropyl alcohol
cups for mixing ink
cotton fabric (ready made garments or ready to sew)
plastic bin
PPE (gloves, respirator, fan, whatever your body needs to feel safe)
