When The Exorcist was released in 1973, audiences were shocked by its disturbing realism and unrelenting horror. What many didn’t know, however, was that the terror extended far beyond the screen. Behind the scenes, the production was plagued by so many bizarre accidents, injuries, and unexplained events that many began to believe the film itself was cursed.

Early into filming, a massive fire broke out on the set of the MacNeil family’s home. The blaze destroyed almost everything—walls, props, and equipment—except for one area: the bedroom where the exorcism scenes were to be filmed. That room remained completely untouched, a detail that unsettled everyone involved. The mysterious fire delayed production for six weeks, forcing the crew to rebuild and only deepening the sense of unease surrounding the movie.

As filming continued, tragedy seemed to follow the cast and crew. Director William Friedkin’s methods also added to the tension. Known for his relentless pursuit of realism, he went to extreme lengths to get genuine reactions from his cast. He would unexpectedly fire guns on set to make actors flinch in terror and even slapped a priest before a take to elicit a more emotional performance. Linda Blair, the young actress who played the possessed Regan, endured physical injuries during the film’s violent scenes. The mechanical rig used to make her thrash on the bed malfunctioned, violently jerking her back and causing a painful spinal injury that affected her for years.

The combination of on-set injuries, deaths, and inexplicable incidents created an atmosphere of fear and paranoia. Many crew members reported feeling uneasy or sensing a dark presence around the set. Eventually, the tension grew so severe that a real priest was brought in to bless the cast, crew, and filming location in hopes of driving away whatever malevolent force might have attached itself to the production.

Even after filming ended, the sense of dread lingered. During the movie’s premiere, audiences fainted, vomited, and ran out of theaters, and one viewer reportedly suffered a heart attack. The chaos surrounding The Exorcist only strengthened its reputation as one of the most cursed and unsettling film productions in Hollywood history — a legacy that continues to fascinate and haunt horror fans to this day.
