MassArt recognizes the work of Lisa Simmons and Alison Simmons, leaders of the Roxbury International Film Festival and champions of representation in film. As Artistic & Executive Director and Co-Director, these sisters have expanded New England’s largest festival celebrating people of color, building community and sparking vital dialogue through storytelling. Beyond RoxFilm, Lisa advances creativity and equity statewide through her work at Mass Cultural Council and her own filmmaking and research into Black cultural history. Together, they embody a shared commitment to visibility, empowerment, and the transformative power of film.

The MassArt Common Good Awards honor individuals and organizations whose work exemplifies the power of art in public life. Established during MassArt’s 150th anniversary, these awards celebrate leaders in advocacy, teaching, placemaking, and creative practice—people who use art and design to strengthen communities and advance the common good.
