This adventure started out as a simple California halibut fishing trip, but it turned into something completely unforgettable. I launched my kayak into Tomales Bay with the hopes of drifting for halibut, but instead I hooked into a massive cow shark, also known as a seven-gill shark. These sharks are powerful, prehistoric predators that roam the coastal waters of California, and hooking one from a kayak means only one thing — a full-on sleigh ride across the bay.

The fight was intense. A cow shark has raw, brute strength unlike anything else, and feeling that power pull against me in a kayak was humbling and exhilarating at the same time. This wasn’t just fishing — this was a test of patience, strength, and respect for the ocean. After a long battle, I made the decision to release the shark.
