East and West (Ost und West) is a 1923 Austrian silent film starring Yiddish film legend Molly Picon.As the spunky daughter of a Polish-American businessman (Sidney Goldin) who returns with her to the old country for a wedding.The comedy features classic scenes from Picon lifting weights and boxing,teaching young villagers to shimmy and gorging herself before sundown on Yom Kippur.Underlying these scenes is veteran filmmaker Sidney Goldin's affectionate appreciation of differences,as the good-natured comedy shapes his portrayal of worldly Jews encountering traditional shtetl (small town) life.

It was a 1923 anti-Semitic rally of 20,000 in Vienna that prompted the production of films made exclusively for the Jewish community. Filmmaker Sidney Goldin felt that the medium of film could best provide an element of escapism for the Jewish audience in that difficult time. His two films, East and West with Molly Picon and Remembrance with Maurice Schwartz, made in 1923 and 1924 respectively, return the viewer to the comparative comfort of Eastern Europe.Despite the fact East and West was aimed at Jewish audiences,it did extremely well.During it's 1923 run in Viena,it even outlasted Charle Chaplin's The Kid in theaters.
