Once The Largest Building in the British Empire (Sun Life Montreal)

Built over three stages between 1914 and 1931, Montreal's Sun Life Building was the Commonwealth's largest building for nearly three decades (by square footage). During World War II, the building was part of a secret operation when Winston Churchill devised a plan to ship British wealth to the safety of Canada. $5 billion in gold reserves and negotiable foreign securities were shipped to its vaults, making it the largest movement of wealth in history. The building remains an icon in downtown Montreal and brilliant example of neo-classical architecture.
