Suctioning the airway is an important part of the tracheostomy patient's routine care. Tracheostomy suctioning removes thick mucus and secretions from the trachea and lower airway that coughing cannot remove. Suctioning is performed in the morning and before going to bed in the evening.

Suctioning is also performed following any respiratory treatments. Tracheostomy tubes can be changed voluntarily or in an emergency situation due to tube blockage, accidental decannulation, or displacement. It is recommended that tracheostomy tubes without an inner lumen be changed every 5-7 days. Patients with excessive secretions may require more frequent tube changes.

The first tube exchange occurs 3-7 days after the surgical tracheostomy. In patients with a percutaneous tracheostomy, at least 7 days should elapse before the first tracheostomy tube change. Double lumen tracheostomy tubes can be left in place for up to 29 days.
