Sensory Motor Integration

Sensory motor integration happens between birth and age 7, and sometimes longer depending on the child. During this period, children learn mostly through motor sensor integration. They learn through their senses how to move their bodies relative to their environment.
Learning to move involves continuous development in the child’s ability to use the body with more skilful, purposeful movement.

This process happens in 3 parts:
1. The sense receives the stimulus;
2. the nerve carries the information to the brain, where information is interpreted;
3. the brain then transmits instructions to the muscles to carry out the response.

The two systems work as a team.

Academic abilities, behaviour and emotional growth all rely on the full integration of these factors.
