CAD welding, or Cadweld, is a brand name for a type of exothermic welding. This process is a fusion welding method that utilizes a chemical reaction to produce the heat needed to melt the metal and create a permanent, molecular bond between two conductors. It's often used for joining copper conductors for grounding systems, as well as for welding steel components like railroad rails.

The process involves a graphite mold that holds the conductors in place. A welding material, typically a thermite composition of copper oxide and aluminum powder, is poured into the mold. This mixture is then ignited with a flint spark or an electronic ignitor. The exothermic reaction creates molten copper that flows into the mold, solidifying to form a durable and corrosion-resistant connection. This method is highly valued because the weld has a current-carrying capacity equal to that of the conductors themselves, and the bond will not loosen or corrode over time.
