2024 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan First Drive Review: Digital Delight

The compact luxury sedan segment is more competitive than ever, but the refreshed 2024 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is pulling out all the stops to stay ahead of the curve. While the updates for this year are mild, Mercedes prioritized further enhancing the A-Class' cutting-edge tech features and impeccably crafted interior over any drastic exterior revisions.

Blink And You'll Miss It
From the outside, the 2024 A-Class sedan receives a few subtle nips and tucks to its front and rear fascias. The grille gets a new diamond stud pattern, while the headlights and taillights have been redesigned with fancier LED signatures. But unless you're a Mercedes-Benz fan, you'll be hard-pressed to distinguish the 2024 model from last year's car on the street.

Digital Decadence
Where the A-Class truly shines is inside the cabin. Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system takes center stage, with two standard 10.25-inch screens (optionally 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen) that create a massive waterfall display on the dashboard. The graphics are crisp, and the user experience is responsive and intuitive with the "Hey Mercedes" voice prompts and touchpad controls.

The rest of the interior is equally impressive, with an elegant design and premium materials you'd expect from the Three-Pointed Star. However, rear seat space remains rather cramped for the class. At least the 8.6 cubic feet of trunk space is generous.

Everyday Competence
On the road, the 2024 A-Class leans toward comfort over outright sportiness. The suspension soaks up bumps nicely, and there's minimal wind and road noise at highway speeds. But models like the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Cadillac CT4 are more engaging to drive.

Most A-Class sedans will use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. This setup provides enough pep for daily commutes, but it's not particularly exciting. For some zest, look toward the Mercedes-AMG A 35 with 302 hp.

The A 250 e plug-in hybrid returns for 2024 as well, pairing the 1.3-liter turbo engine with an electric motor for a combined 218 hp. Mercedes estimates up to 48 miles of electric range, though real-world figures are likely lower.

Worth The Premium?
When it goes on sale late this year, the 2024 Mercedes A-Class will carry a starting price of around $35,000 for the A 220 sedan. That's a hefty sum for a compact car, even in the luxury space. But for shoppers who appreciate the latest in-car tech and an impeccably crafted cabin, the little Mercedes makes a compelling case for itself, even if it lacks the driving verve of some competitors.

For Mercedes loyalists or those prioritizing digital amenities, the updated A-Class continues to hit the mark. But if you're looking for thrills behind the wheel, other sport sedans in this segment will likely leave you more satisfied.
