A documentary about the restoration work of Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi in George Town, Penang. Features interviews with Peter Cheah, Chairman of Cheah Kongsi and Mei Chee Seong of ALM Architects. The restoration of the two-century-old temple represents a milestone achievement in reviving a living religious heritage site using a combination of indigenous knowledge of Chinese and Malay vernacular building techniques. The 18-month project with the help of craftsman from the Fujian province use traditional carpentry and masonry building techniques, “cut-and-paste” (jian nien), and materials to preserve the dilapidated elements. Detailed archival research and careful design was done between the architects, conservators, Chinese craftsman and Kongsi stakeholders to reverse inappropriate previous interventions in the roof and duogong paint making Cheah Kongsi a notable heritage landmark in George Town, Penang.
