The Union Cabinet has approved the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission, chaired by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The commission has been given 18 months to submit its report, with the new pay scales expected to be implemented starting January 1, 2026. This decision will impact about 50 lakh central government employees and around 69 lakh pensioners, who are likely to receive a salary hike of 30-34%. The minimum salary may increase to approximately ₹44,280. The commission will review various allowances and may merge or remove some old ones like Travel Allowance and Special Duty Allowance for more transparency and simplification.

Alongside these developments, the Reserve Bank of India has repatriated 64 tonnes of gold from overseas, reflecting changes in India’s financial strategy influenced by global events such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. These factors collectively shape India’s economic and financial policy environment, making this period significant for government employees, pensioners, and the broader economy.
