Courtney is a sophomore at Loyola Marymount University. As a young child, she was raised by an older couple she affectionately calls "grandmother and papa." They nurtured her curiosity through trips to the library and countless nights reading and watching the Discovery channel. Courtney skipped the first grade and remembers being the "freak-genius kid," always bigger yet younger than her peers. However, from the age of eight to sixteen, she moved to nearly a dozen foster homes. During this volatile period, books became a haven for Courtney and the classroom was the one place she felt at home. Courtney credits her experiences in foster care for her success. As she likes to quote, Aristotle said "Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain." Courtney is living proof of this wisdom. She encourages other foster youth to push themselves beyond their circumstances and be the authors of their own stories.
