Located in the county of Suffolk, and around nine miles west of Lowestoft, is the town of Beccles.

Geographically, Beccles is situated along the south bank of the River Waveney which defines a large part of the Norfolk-Suffolk border. It is one of a small number of places in England recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having a market. This would have been originally held on the street named Old Market (which is now where the town's bus station is located). During the 14th century, a new market was established along the street named, appropriately, New Market. Beccles is said to have been the third largest town in Suffolk during the Medieval era behind Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.

At the heart of the town is St Michael's Church. This dates from the 14th century, and features a rare example of an English detached bell tower from the 16th century, both of which are Grade I listed.

In 1586 a great fire broke out in Beccles, destroying around 80 houses.

In 1631 Sir John Leman High School was founded in Beccles. Leman was a former Lord Mayor of London, who retained a strong association with his hometown of Beccles. Funds left in his will were put towards the opening of the school, which was originally housed in a 16th century building, and later remodelled in the Jacobean style (featuring prominently around the 13-minute mark). The school has since relocated around 500 metres to the south, just down the road. The original building is now home to Beccles and District Museum.

In 1854 the railway arrived in Beccles courtesy of the East Suffolk Railway. Today, the station is situated along the East Suffolk Line which runs between Ipswich and Lowestoft.

Famous people to have spent part of their childhoods in Beccles include broadcaster David Frost and Nobel Prize winner Dorothy Hodgkin.
