Members of the European Parliament clashed on Wednesday after two suspected drones crossed into Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border, triggering a heated debate on the EU’s readiness to respond to emerging security threats. Romanian MEP Georgiana Teodorescu said the drone, described as Russian, was escorted but never shot down before crashing in Vaslui County, exposing what she called Europe’s defence weaknesses. German MEP Thomas Geisel urged restraint, criticising “Russophobic hysteria” and calling for evidence-based assessments of recent drone and sabotage incidents across Europe. Bulgarian MEP Peter Volgin escalated tensions further by accusing Ukraine of carrying out the 2022 Nord Stream explosions and attacking the Druzhba pipeline, claims denied by Kyiv and Washington. The exchanges highlighted deepening divisions within the EU as drone sightings and cross-border threats continue to raise alarm along the eastern frontier.
