Let’s start with the difference:

NPN is a sinking sensor.
That means when it detects an object, it connects the signal to 0 volts — or ground.
It pulls current into the PLC input.

PNP is a sourcing sensor.
It does the opposite — it sends +24 volts to the PLC input when active.

Both detect objects — but the way they send signals is different.
And if you wire them the wrong way… your PLC input won’t respond at all.

Now, the wiring:

For NPN:
Brown goes to +24V
Blue goes to 0V
Black goes to the PLC digital input
And the PLC’s COM terminal must be connected to 0V

For PNP:
Brown to +24V
Blue to 0V
Black to PLC input
And COM must go to +24V

Here’s a tip:

Use NPN with sinking input cards — where COM is 0V
Use PNP with sourcing input cards — where COM is +24V

Always match the sensor type with the input type.
Otherwise, your system won’t work — no matter how perfect your wiring is!
