The African Union closed its annual summit yesterday by condemning a recent "wave" of military coups that has seen an unprecedented number of member states suspended from the bloc. This has spurred fears of what its top officials described as "democratic backpedaling." The insurrections were among the main issues raised at the two-day summit, thought leaders from across the continent also had heated discussions over the AU's ties to Israel. The bloc has also called for greater representation at the United Nations. Africa remains poorly represented in the UN Security Council.
