Rest in Peace

Fr. John Valles hailed from Dahod, Panchmahals.

In the early hours of 7th June 2024, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Fr. John Francis Valles was called back to the loving bosom of the Heavenly Father

 Fr. John Valles hailed from Dahod, Panchmahals.
 He was born on 10.10.1943 to Victor Sebastian Valles and
Assumption Valles. He had one sister and five brothers. The last of
his surviving siblings, his sister, died a few months ago.
 He did his Philosophy at St Pius Seminary Mumbai from 1966 to
1968; he completed his Theology, also at St. Pius X Seminary,
Mumbai from 1968 to 1972.
 He was ordained a priest on 10.12.1972 in Mumbai. Hailing from
Dahod, he is the first local priest of the Diocese of Baroda.
 Soon after his ordination he was first posted in the Bishop’s House Vadodara and was then sent to study the Gujarati language at Newman Hall, Ahmedabad
 He served as an assistant, learning and growing in his priesthood at various places: From 1974 to
1975 he was in Vyara and Dharampur; From 1976 to 1980 at Jhagadia; From 1980 to 1982 at
Umarpada and at Surat from 1982 to 1984.

 He tried to help in finding lands for expansion in Udhna, padre and Rajpipla.
 He served as Parish Priest of Navsari from 1984 to 1991
 He was then Parish Priest of Zaroli from 1991 to 1999
 From 1999 to 2009 he served as Parish Priest in Navsari & in charge of Bilimora. During this
time he built the Church at Bilimora.
 From 2009 to 2018 he served as parish priest of Bilimora until the age of retirement.
 Thereafter he was in Valsad on the staff.
 From 2022 he has been on the staff at Bilimora parish.

Fr. John was a simple, jovial and hospitable person. He was always available and close to his parishioners, graceful and devout in the liturgical celebrations. In 2009, when a form was given to all diocesans to submit their bio-data, in the area where his Home Address was to be filled, he wrote: My parish is my home (Bilimora)! He made it even more homely for all who visited him with his culinary skills and jolly singing.

In the last few years he had his health problems related to ageing as well as diabetes. A couple of months ago, a small part of his toe was amputated. He rang me up a few days ago to say that it was healing well and he was fine.

In the early hours of the seventh, feeling unwell, he woke Fr. Robert Machado, the parish priest at
Bilimora. He asked for black tea; he collapsed a while later, was rushed to hospital and went back to his heavenly abode at around 1220 am.

His last rites will be at Holy Trinity Church, Bilimora at 4 pm on 8th June 2024. We lose another of the titans of the pioneering years of the diocese. Requiescat in Pacem.
