Описание к видео The Uncounted - A conversation with Azmat Khan and Basim Razzo

Journalist Azmat Khan’s investigation of the anti-ISIS air war in Iraq and Syria for the New York Times Magazine revealed a significantly less precise operation than the US-led coalition acknowledged. Her on-the-ground reporting revealed that the coalition had consistently failed to investigate victims’ claims properly—or to keep records that would have made it possible to investigate those claims at all. One of those victims was Basim Razzo, who suffered profound losses in the bombings and is a centerpiece of Khan’s article.

Since her piece, The Uncounted, was published in November, Khan’s meticulous reporting—and the power of Razzo’s story—have upended understandings of the conflict and led to some important policy changes. Watch to hear more of Razzo’s incredible story, and Khan’s account of bringing this urgent narrative to light.

Basim Razzo
Basim Razzo was a resident of Mosul, Iraq, where he owned a pharmacy and was an account manager for the Chinese multinational telecom company Huawei. In September 2015, a US airstrike targeted his home, killing his wife, daughter, brother, and nephew. Gravely injured, Basim snuck out of ISIS territory to get medical care in Turkey. He returned to Iraq in 2016 and set out a quest to understand why his family's homes were targeted in the anti-ISIS air war. He is a graduate of Western Michigan University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1988.

Azmat Khan
Azmat Khan is an investigative reporter, a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, and a Future of War Fellow at New America and Arizona State University. Her accountability investigations have taken her to conflict zones such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and have been awarded the National Magazine Award for reporting, the Overseas Press Club award for magazine reporting, and the Deadline Club Award for Independent Digital Reporting. She received an MSt. from Oxford University, a B.A. from the University of Michigan, and studied at the American University in Cairo.
