Another native strawberry to Eastern North America is Fragaria americana (sometimes referred to a subspecies of the European F. vesca), but it will not have that detail of the terminal leaflet tooth that I showed! Finally, there is one additional North American native that I think you should also know about is Fragaria chiloensis. It also has a somewhat notched terminal leaflet, but has hairy leaflet edges and grows in sandy beach soils.

If you look at the leaflets of common garden strawberries you will also see this notched terminal leaflet pattern and that is because the garden strawberry that we all are familiar with is actually a hybrid cross between F. virginiana and F. chiloensis! How cool is that?!

Let’s talk more about distinguishing from “mock strawberry” Potentilla indica (edible but tastes like water and disappointment). I showed you some leaf details of true wild strawberry, but the easiest way to tell by far is this - mock strawberry flowers are YELLOW and true strawberry (of the ones I show) are WHITE. That’s it! :D

We transplanted some of the wild strawberries that we found to “greener” fields as they are growing along a power-line clearing and could be glyphosated at any moment… :/
