The decommissioning and reclamation process is a multi-step process of disconnecting solar and wind systems from connection to the utility, removing the physical assets (such as solar panels, racks, inverters, cables, etc.) and restoring the environment to what it was prior to the project being built.

Without a decommissioning bond, large solar and wind projects could be abandoned with no plan to restore the land to its previous condition, the land-owner could end up with massive unexpected expenses at the end of a project’s useful life. If the project is built on publicly owned land, the burden to restore the land could fall on the tax payers.
