Red Heat, developed by Special FX and published by Ocean Software in 1989. The game was released for most of the 16/8bit computers of the time and is mostly the same on all platforms.

"The heat is on - and the chase is in full cry as East and West join forces to hunt down a Soviet drugs dealer. The two detectives; one Russian, one American have very different methods of capturing their prey, but together they face the worst of Chicago's under-world - street fights, the 'Cleanheads' gang, gun fire - the hottest film tie-in to date - it's all action with stunning graphics - feel the heat - RED HEAT"

Not a great game on any platform but at least the C64 version doesn't sacrifice too much and is just as good/bad as the other versions. The game goes for a cinematic view so there is a lot of wasted screen real estate. There are only four levels, but the insane difficulty Ocean games are renowned for means you pretty much have to beat each level in a single life. If you die it's back to the start of the level and there are a lot of bad guys you have to get through. Main problem is the lack of energy pickups and this couldn't be more apparent then on level 2 where you need them most with all the extra gun fire going on. Then in level 3 , suddenly they are plentiful. Level two is a hospital where you would expect more health. I actually get stuck in level 2 and am forced to drag it out slowly waiting for health to appear. My fault for being careless though I guess.

In the C64 version, the Red Heat logo fills up as you progress to give a visual indication of how much level is left. The game opens up nicely, looking like the developers put themselves out for this version but a major bummer though is that there is no ending in this version and it just loops round back to the first level. Even the Spectrum crappy 'Well Done' message would have been welcome. At the end of the video I add the level start / game over jingles you only get with music option enabled.
