Narcissists and abusers utilize triangulation as a manipulative strategy in two different ways.

This tactic involves introducing a third party into the dynamic, either by directly involving another person or by insinuating the presence of a potential rival, or potential “common enemy” (such as an evil ex for example).
By doing so, they can create a sense of either competition and jealousy, or of sympathy and support. This means that you either be constantly seeking their approval and affection or excusing their bad behaviours by blaming it on the third person. The “evil ex” is a common one, as not only does it create the sympathy, but also means it’s easy to protect the truth if you were to ever hear from the ex.

Where a rival gets introduced, triangulation also serves to undermine your confidence and self-esteem, as you constantly compare yourself to the perceived rival. This tactic enables the narcissist to assert dominance, manipulate emotions, and perpetuate a cycle of insecurity and dependency within the relationship, ultimately reinforcing their control over you.

Where a common enemy is used, triangulation serves to enhance your link to them, creating more sympathy, protective instincts, and ultimately will mean you may turn a blind eye to certain behaviours, by blaming them on the common enemy.
