The Philippine Congress on Wednesday started the official counting of votes cast in the May 9 presidential election, with results expected to be announced on June 8.

The country is focused on the more closely fought vice presidential race between Leni Robredo and Ferdinand Marcos Jr., as Rodrigo Duterte, the 71-year-old mayor of Davao city, is confirmed to have already won the presidential election by an unofficial tally.

The vote counting is being held at the House of Representatives, where lawmakers and others are checking some 600 ballot boxes of votes.

According to an unofficial tally, Robredo is leading Marcos by some 200,000 votes in the vice presidential election. Marcos, however, has alleged that there were irregularities in the counting of votes.
