There was a religious sister at a parish I was at previously from where I am not who was in quotes retired. Now religious sisters never retire! They're always doing different things, but she shared when she was in active ministry, one of her active ministries she was a part of was a decluttering ministry. She would help people that, talk about hoarding things, and all of a sudden, the house, apartment, whatever fills up with lots and lots of things and she would help people declutter. And of course, there's a lot of different realities that come with this gathering a lot of different things. Many times, we don't want to let go of something because someone gave it to us and if I let go of it then I’m disrespecting them and things like this. There's a lot tied into that situation. Many times, even spouses will say, I’m a saver she's a get it out of the house. Many times, there's that dynamic in families. But I asked Sr. Lucille what, how did she help doing that? Is there something, insight she had that guided that ministry. And what she said was to treat everything you have like a flower, like a flower, which is an interesting thing. What does it mean treat everything you have like a flower? And she said well, you know a flower, someone gives you a flower and you love it for 2-3 weeks and then you have to throw it out. The challenge with many things is that you can't throw it out. It's always there and it becomes this thing that's packed away and things continue to expand. But that insight of treat it like a flower. It's beautiful you love it for a time but then it's time to move one. It's time to get rid of it. You have to throw it away. And so often what happens, what happens in our life and it's what Jesus is guarding, is telling us to guard about in the gospel today is so often we do, we tend to continue to take things on that aren't good for our eternal salvation. We tend to pack things in to our heart. That the Lord says, let go. Let go. In the second reading we hear seek the things that are above, not the things of earth. Everything of this earth is like that flower that might be good for a time but then it wilts. It has to be thrown away. Everything, everything about it. But what lasts forever? Our eternal soul. Our eternal soul. The things of the soul. The things of the soul are here in this world and will be with us forever. The things for above will be with us forever. And the goal of this life is to use the possessions, use the blessings that we may have to get us to the next life. To get others to the next life. Everything we have is like that flower. We have it for a moment but it's going to be thrown away. It needs to be thrown away. The things of the soul. Are eternal. They last forever. Are we investing ourselves in the things that are eternal? Or are we going to be like the man in the gospel, you've got all these great things but like the flower, they're dead. No return. The things of heaven are eternal. Let us place our hearts in the things that are eternal.
