This Colombian Chachalaca bird has an amazing call or "canto de chachalaca" as they say in Costa Rica and Colombia. It seemed as if this bird was using its song to tell us something very important to it as we walked through the National Aviary of Colombia near Cartagena. As we approached, the chachalaca bird jumped onto the railing and ran toward us like a charging velociraptor making a loud calling sound, as if warning us away. I hesitate to call it a chachalaca song because it seemed more like a warning or threat call than a normal bird song. This is one of 138 bird species that are resident at Colombia's National Aviary. We could not find a complete list of the species housed there, and we initially thought this was a Guan, perhaps Cauca Guan, but a commenter suggester chachalaca, and that seems like a better call after consulting Cornell's Bird Lab website and comparing the sounds and appearance of the two species.
