How do you effectively downsize to move into an active adult community?

Moving to an active adult community can be a refreshing change. But downsizing also involves letting go of possessions you no longer need or have space for. And that can be incredibly difficult if you have placed emotional value on your possessions. Deciding to get rid of mementos from raising your children can bring on lots of sadness. It’s important to remember that the things are just things. Getting rid of stuff doesn’t mean you lose the memories. Those memories will always be yours.

Sorting through your belongings, you will need to decide what to keep, donate, sell, and discard. Prioritize what the necessary functional items are and then, if you still have room, you can hold on to a few things with sentimental value.

One tip I learned a long time ago to take photos of whatever you can’t keep. You can always look back at the photos to rekindle the memories.
