It’s beginning to look a lot like #texasstyletuesday! I’m making a holiday season joke because it was supposed to “snow” today in Nashville and it didn’t even do enough to justify the word in quotes. Disappointing. In any case, today I bring you Kill ‘Em Rag. I don’t know if the word rag actually goes in the title. I’ve seen it both ways from reasonably credible sources. But there’s no doubt it is a rag. Starts on the 5 chord, has a repeating little notey pattern section, all the hallmarks of a rag. The one difference you might notice right away is that it’s a hell of a lot slower than what you might think traditional ragtime music would be. That’s a hallmark of Texas style fiddling. Rags, but slow. As we’ve talked about before, contests with time limits have altered traditional Texas style tempos but if you go back in the day, before all of that, you’ll find that most of the players played these at more of a groovy, loping tempo. I combined a couple of variations here. One, from the late Vernon Solomon of the legendary Solomon family who influenced Texas style for generations. And two, from Gary Lee Moore, a living legend who is known for never being bothered to speed up, even in the face of draconian time limits. I’m almost positive I originally learned this from another living legend, Danita Gardner. Danita was the first woman to win the National Championships as well as several other long-time boys only contests and made the Texas style world that much more inspiring for women to rise up and do what they’re all doing today. Whoever you are, you deserve to play a rag at a nice funky tempo. Here’s one. (Oh! Don’t ask me how to bow the A part. I’ve found at least six ways to do it.
