In this video we will take an in-depth look at each step that goes into the creation of the blacksmith's Rubiks Twist, and finish our piece with a functional bottle opener as well. We Cover Basic supplies needed, such as personal protective equipment ( protective eye wear, respiratory protection from silica dust created from the grinding discs, gloves, ear plugs - helps to keep grinder sparks out of the ears as well as reduces loud sounds), the grinding discs used and some basic safety recommendations when using them, as well as the twisting tool used and some options to create your own. Be patient when heating your work piece; the more evenly heated your work piece is, the more consistent and even spiral/twist will happen. Begin twisting quickly after placing the work piece in the vise, as the vise will act as a heatsink and quickly begin to cool the lower portion of your work piece, resulting in an uneven twist spiral compression, as well as increased difficulty for twisting as the work piece cools. Do not quench after twisting, as quenching will harden the work piece and make the cutting of the bottle opener notch very difficult (or drilling of lanyard/leash hole). In this video I can be seen lighting a propane forge with an old lighter, this can be dangerous as potential lighter fumes may still be present on a seemingly empty lighter. It is recommended to always use a striker when lighting a forge such as this, or a torch assembly.
