China has built a road network that runs through the Tibetan and Yi settlements in the hinterland of the Hengduan Mountains in Sichuan - The National Highway 248, known as the Tibetan-Yi Corridor. This road is located in the deep folds of the Hengduan Mountains. It is also known as the mysterious fairyland on earth of "Shangri-La". It has long farewell to the era of "the road in Shu (Sichuan) is more difficult than climbing to the sky", but the "sky road" under the blue sky and white clouds still allows us to deeply appreciate the meaning of "far" and "high". The Tibetan-Yi Corridor is not only a geographical concept, but also a cultural concept, a place known as the "epitomy of Tibetan and Yi culture".
We will start from Jiulong County, Ganzi Prefecture, along this road from north to south. Jiulong County is the first stop in the transition from Tibetan area to Yi ethnic settlements. It is located in the core part of the Tibetan-Yi Corridor in the folds of the Hengduan Mountains. It is also the most dangerous area of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. Historically, the Tibetan, Han and Yi met and lived together here, so the Jiulong area has the characteristics of cultural diversity and ethnic integration.
The creation of nature has made Jiulong known as a paradise on earth, but because the main peak of the Daxue Mountain Range, Mount Gongga (7,556 meters above sea level), runs through the entire territory, the terrain is high in the north and low in the south, with large ups and downs and abnormal height differences. The Hengduan Mountain Road is difficult to travel, which is a realistic description of this place. As of 1971, there was no highway in the county, but in the past two decades, a large number of infrastructure constructions have entered the snowy plateau. By the end of 2023, the mileage of roads in Jiulong County will be 1,022.05 kilometers, including 158.846 kilometers of national roads, 29.209 kilometers of provincial roads, 256.061 kilometers of county roads, 267.944 kilometers of township roads, and 309.99 kilometers of village roads. One after another, magical roads have been paved between the mountains and valleys. From then on, the mountains are no longer high, the roads are no longer long, and the land outside the mountains is no longer far away. The natural scenery of the "Tibetan-Yi Corridor·Secret Jiulong" has attracted more and more explorers driving to visit it.
Driving with me to explore the Secret realm in the remote mountains in the magical Sichuan, to witness it’s marvelous infrastructure constructions through the charming Chinese Tibetan and Yi ethnic territory.
