Despite leading and serving for the match on multiple occasions, Raducanu was broken twice and forced into a deciding set. The 22-year-old had to contend not only with a spirited opponent but also with difficult conditions, including cold weather, rain delays, and the effects of a lingering cold. Returning to the Foro Italico for the first time since 2022—when she had to retire from her opening-round match—Raducanu was determined to make a mark. She surged to a 5-0 lead in the third set before once again being broken while serving for the win. However, on her third opportunity, she finally closed out the match just before 11 p.m. local time. Speaking after the win, Raducanu admitted the delays had taken a toll on her energy and revealed she had been struggling with a cold. “I’ve had this cold for about a week,” she told the Daily Mail. “You can’t really breathe through your nose and then you’re out there in long rallies and freezing temperatures. I’m just trying to take care of myself.” Looking ahead, Raducanu is set to face 21st seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round. The pair have already clashed twice this year, with Raducanu winning their Australian Open encounter before Alexandrova avenged the loss in Doha.
