A MYSTERIOUS metal monument which sparked global intrigue after appearing on a Romanian hillside was feared to have been stolen by tinkers last night.

The gleaming 13-foot monolith appeared overnight on windswept Batca Doamnei Hill near the city of Piatra Neamt on November 26, triggering wild claims it was placed by aliens.

Its discovery came a week after a virtually identical structure was found in a remote part of the Utah desert in the US.

The American object also disappeared within days with no explanation after sending conspiracy theorists and UFO-spotters into a frenzy of speculation.

But the fate of it’s dark, metallic Romanian cousin - covered in concentric rings markings - was feared to have been quickly decided by local scrap metal merchants.

Police sources said the object - facing the holy peak of Mount Ceahlau - disappeared as quickly as it arrived after the glow of what appeared to be metal cutting gear was spotted on the hill.

The mysterious metal structure in Romania was found a few metres from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress.

Locals said they saw lights “which appeared to shine directly to the sky” in the early hours of Monday before the monolith vanished.

Locals who arrived on horseback were said to have been sizing up its worth “kilogram by kilogram” as soon as it arrived.

A Romanian police source told The Sun last night: “Police in Neamt think it is most likely that a local auto mechanic that took away the steel structure from the hill.But they are unlikely to face charges because no one claimed to own it.The lights seen were probably a welding machine and it is probably already at a scrapyard where metals are recovered. szyxflb.com/sitemap.xml
