I travelled from Kumamoto to Kagoshima by Shinkanzen bullet train in just 45 minutes. The same journey by car would have taken 2.5 - 3 hours, so rail travel is definitely the way to get from city to city in Japan.

I checked into the Sheraton hotel in Kahoshima and got a slight upgrade. I saw when I was booking the rooms that there were no suites available, so the Marriott Titanium status wasn't going to bag me such a nice upgrade like the one I had in Nagasaki.

I did book the cheapest room which has no view, and was upgraded to the same room layouot but on a high floor with a stunning view of Sakurajima, the volcanic island next to Kagoshima. That room is in a higher category and usually costs an extra $40 a night.

After getting settled in and stocking up the mini-bar for later, I headed out for a bit of an explore. I went up a big Ferris wheel but the view of Sakurajima was obscured by its own smoke. It's very active and last erupted a few months ago. Still, I plan to go over and visit it at some point.

My first dinner in Kagoshima was a local speciality, the famous black pig Kurobuta that is known as 'the wagyu of pork'. I had it as Tonkatsu, which is a deep-fried breaded pork cutlet, at a very friendly local restaurant, and it didn't disappoint. The Kurobuta tonkatsu was soft, juicy and packed with flavour. Yum yum.

The next day I explored some of the history of Kagoshima, or what used to be the Satsuma Domain, by visiting Sengan-en, the home of the old Samurai lord of the Shimazu clan who once ruled here.

It was a beautiful and scenic estate and there weren't many tourists there so I enjoyed exploring it in peace.

I tried a famous local sweet there called Jambo Mochi, which is a very chewy rice flour snack covered in a sweet miso syrup. It's kinda sweet and savoury at the same time. The samurais used to stop by at Sengan-en to pick up Jambo Mochi before heading off on their travels, so it's a very traditional snack around here.

Back in Kagoshima city centre, I visited a yakiniku restaurant. Yakiniku means 'grilled meat' in Japanese and is a style of dining where bite-sized pieces of meat, seafood, and vegetables are grilled right at the table that has a charcoal or gas grill built into it.

Having tried 'the wagyu of pork' the day before, this time I tried some actual wagyu beef. And of course it was 10/10 delicious. Yum yum yum yum.

I finished off the day by buying a bunch more souvenirs from the gacha machines, and getting some nice unique souvenirs from one of those big nerdy collectables shops, in the way of some video game magazines from the 1980's and 90's which were in perfect condition.

By the time I leave Japan I'm gonna need an extra suitcase just for all the souvenirs.

My plan for the next vlog is to visit Sakurajima, the beautiful volcanic island that I've been looking out onto from my hotel room every day.
