Film Commissioner Cassandra Hesseltine discusses Jim's experiences on set as a stunt coordinator and 2nd Unit Director in our continuing interview series.


Jim's bio-

Martial Artist, Stuntman and Second Unit Director Jim Vickers is known for his work on Equilibrium (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002) and Grey’s Anatomy (2005). Jim grew up on the island of Puerto Rico, moved to South Florida during his High School years and attended Jacksonville University on an art scholarship. Throughout all of this time he studied martial arts for which he eventually earned the rank of 4th degree Black Belt. He began to instruct after opening his own martial arts schools. He was always inspired by the likes of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris, Jim began putting his talents to work in front of live audiences. What Jim had begun on stage, he now wanted to apply to both the small and large screens. In the late 1980’s the opportunity materialized. His first taste of show business came with the series Miami Vice.

His experiences on Miami Vice helped inspire him to begin training actors in how to fight, which led to his working as a film Fight Choreographer and then to 2nd Unit Director. For the next ten years, Jim worked as a stunt performer and fight choreographer, learning the trade the old school way from some of the best stunt people in the business. Jim made a name for himself in the stunt world, and caught the attention of various prominent Hollywood producers and directors. In the 1990’s Jim’s career as stunt coordinator began and he continue in the profession today.

In the early 2000’s, Jim began working as second unit director. Over the years, he has been 2nd Unit Director, Stunt Coordinator and Fight Choreographer for many successful television shows.

Jim has directed on copious projects over the 30 years he has been in the entertainment industry. These projects include network television, feature film, and award winning shorts. Most recently, he directed an episode on the FOX series, Lucifer.

He began his directing career in the late 1990’s and became a member of the Latino Committee within the DGA shortly thereafter.
image.gifIn 2002 through 2003 he 2nd unit directed on 31 of 40 episodes for MGM Television’s “She Spies”. Shortly thereafter he embarked on what has been a 16 year relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer TV and CBS Studios, directing on shows the likes of “Lucifer", "Scorpion", "Training Day", CSI Miami” and “NUMB3RS".


To date, Jim has received four Emmy nominations and won for his directing work on “CSI Miami”. In addition to his television credits, Jim has directed on numerous feature films for which he has garnished many accolades, including the Taurus World Stunt Award for Best Action Sequence.
