As with many breeds of the Americas, the Chilean horse has it’s roots in the Spanish mounts
Similar in bloodlines to the Criollo of Argentina, the Chilean version is slightly heavier in confirmation. They were initially bred and used as a work animal. The innate hardiness of the breed was well utilized, however selective breeding didn’t begin until 1913.

The Chilean horse (caballo-chilena, Chilean corralero) comes from South America. It is one of the oldest breeds. Her ancestors were Andalusian and Casilla breeds. Diego Almagro brought the first horses to Chile in 1536. And the first local horse breeder was Rodrigo Gonzalez de Marmolejo. By the 19th century, Chile had become the leading producer of quality horses in Latin America. The geographical isolation of the country allowed the Chilean breed to develop in genetic purity. The breed book was opened in 1893, and the standard was finally approved in 1921. The genealogy book is currently closed. Since 1850, the active export of Chilean horses began throughout America and even overseas. Initially, this breed was selected for military purposes and service in the army, but in the future, it was mainly used to work with cattle. The breed is exported to Australia, South Africa, Burma, Brazil, Argentina and the USA.
The Chilean horse is considered a universal breed. It is used in agricultural work, livestock work, and as a means of transport.
Chilean horses are hardworking and hardy. They are distinguished by good health and excellent physical shape. Animals are immune to diseases, their pain threshold is higher than that of other breeds of horses. Representatives of this breed have an obedient and compliant character. In keeping, this breed is unpretentious and very economical, not demanding on feed.
Chilean rodeo is the second most popular sport (after football) in Chile. It has been considered a national sport since 1962.
The Chilean form of rodeo has been practiced for more than 400 years. The rules of the Chilean rodeo differ significantly from the rules of the rodeo adopted in the USA and other North American countries. The goal of the competition is that two riders (Spanish: huaso) must stop a young bull without any equipment, only pressing it with the horse's body. Depending on where the bull's body is pressed, points are awarded (the closer to the tail, the more). The barrier of the arena has the shape of a crescent moon and is often painted in the colors of the Chilean flag. The traditional costume of riders is a patterned chamanto cape and a felt hat (straw in summer). About 320 official and about the same number of unofficial rodeos are held per hour. The duration of the rodeo is 1-2 days (Saturday and Sunday). The most devoted spectators are in their seats until 8 o'clock.
