On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share something crazy and unexpected that just happened that could have caused serious consequences to my fruit trees. Rootstock suckering is a common problem that typically happens at the base of a grafted fruit tree. A rootstock sucker robs energy from the grafted tree and can weaken it or even kill the graft, so they should be removed. However, rootstock suckers can also migrate along the roots. I found rootstock suckers 26 feet away from my tree, and had I not noticed this, it could have had devastating long-term impacts on not just the mother fruit tree, but all the surrounding fruit trees!
