Sorting for a Cleaner Future

Every day, thousands of tons of waste pile up here at Moshi, the largest waste management facility in PCMC. Behind these mountains of garbage are real heroes – rag pickers risking their lives to salvage recyclables.

They work in risky, unhygienic conditions. Without a proper sorting system, most recyclable plastics get missed – ending up in the incinerator… polluting our air, our soil, and our water.

When burnt for power, plastics release toxic chemicals, contributing to air pollution and climate change.

But change is here. Introducing the Waste Sorting Conveyor Belt – a cleaner, safer, and more efficient way to manage waste.

With this system:
• 1000 to 1400 tons of waste will be processed daily.
• 60 to 80 rag pickers can work safely at once.
• Plastic collection will increase from 5-6 tons to 14-15 tons per day.
• Sorted plastic will no longer end up in incinerators, preventing toxic emissions.

This means better hygiene, safer working conditions, and higher income for rag pickers – while reducing air pollution and protecting our environment.

The impact goes beyond the belt:

• Cleaner air by reducing plastic burning
• Adherence to Solid Waste Management Rules 2016
• 7 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided annually
• Contribution to a circular economy and climate change mitigation.

This project is part of the PCMC Waste Management and Energy Generation Facility, operated by Antony Lara Renewable Energy in collaboration with PCMC, supported by BMC Software India Pvt. Ltd and Thinksharp Foundation as implementing partner.
