Script:
What's up y'all. Today is February 6th, and it's Jazz Thursday. It's kind of funny, when one of my buddy's found out I was doing black history month, he asked me, "It's not gonna be all jazz, is it?" Nah, we're just doing four jazz albums.
Today's album is Afro by Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy Gillespie is one of the founders of bebop. I chose this release over Machito & Charlie Parker's The Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite, I think mainly because the title 'Afro' has an ambiguity that better fits this month's theme - I also think Gillespie had a greater obsession with the Afro-Cuban jazz sound, that is packaged nicely on this album. The first four tracks of the album form one of my favorite jazz suites; the fifth track is Dizzy's most famous composition A Night and Tunesia. The album ends with a a version of Duke Ellington's Caravan, that, with Diz's energy, feels like a composition of his own.
Dizzy Gillespie's style was best described by critic Pierro Scaruffi as "an almost manic form of art, turning dynamics into the very essence of jazz at the expense of intimacy (sometimes replaced by overtones of melodrama and euphoria)."
This has been my favorite jazz album ever since I listened to it five or so years ago. A couple years ago, I was talking with a friend about how neither of us knew a lot of jazz music, but I told him I had heard jazz that sounded harder than even some metal. I had piqued his interest, and he wanted to hear that, but the only thing I could think of on the spot was Peter Brötzmann Octet (which, I think is technically true, but it wasn't the point I was trying to make.) This album, Afro, is the album I meant to play.
Links for listening are in the description, so please, go listen, as I just did, and enjoy!
