Some film moments don’t just live on screen, they live in memory. Hema Malini twirling to Jab Tak Hai Jaan in Sholay is one such scene, forever etched into the soul of Hindi cinema. Graceful, powerful and timeless, the sequence looks effortless even today. But behind the poetry of that dance lay blistering heat, painful rocks, and a deeply concerned mother watching her daughter push through one of the toughest shoots of her career.

As Sholay completes 50 years, Hema Malini has revisited the making of the iconic song and revealed just how physically demanding it really was. Speaking to IANS at a magazine cover launch celebrating the film’s milestone anniversary, the veteran actor opened up about dancing barefoot on rocky terrain in peak summer and the objections that came from home.

“My mother was so worried about me dancing on the rocks bare feet, especially considering the extreme heat," Hema Malini said, recalling the shoot that took place in May. She went on to describe the harsh conditions on set, adding, “The sand, the mud and especially the rocks were unbearably hot. Even stepping barefoot on the stones was very painful. My mother was worried and suggested that I wear a thin sole under my feet so that it wouldn’t hurt too much."

The solution, however, didn’t last long. According to Hema Malini, director Ramesh Sippy quickly noticed the adjustment and shut it down. “Rameshji noticed it immediately and asked me to remove it. He explained that during the dance movements, it would be visible on screen, and that wouldn’t look right."

The actor also revealed that she had tried to convince the filmmaker to reschedule the shoot to a cooler time of the year. “I tried my best to convince Ramesh Sippy to shoot the song in November or December. I told him it would be extremely hot in May and that I would be able to dance better if we avoided that heat. But he was very particular and said he wanted it to be shot in May itself."

Once the cameras stopped rolling, the toll on her body became evident. “After the shoot, I would put my feet in cold water and wrap them in cold towels to reduce the pain. I think my years of Bharatanatyam practice gave my legs and feet the strength to endure it."

Released in 1975, Sholay went on to become one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema history. Alongside Hema Malini, the film starred Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan and Sachin Pilgaonkar in memorable roles.
