Land Of Seven Sisters

The "Land of the Seven Sisters" is a nickname for the seven contiguous states of northeastern India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. The term was coined in the late 1960s by Jyoti Prasad Saikia, a journalist from Tripura, to highlight the states' geographical, historical, and cultural similarities, as well as their interdependence and camaraderie. The term was used in a radio talk show to coincide with the inauguration of the new states in January 1972, and Saikia later wrote a book about the states' commonalities. The nickname has become popular, in part due to the book.
