Описание к видео New class of police officers graduates as city addresses public safety

Forty-seven new officers graduated from the Columbus Police Academy on Friday, with 36 of them set to join the Columbus Police Department.

The graduation coincides with city leaders unveiling significant investments in public safety. The Department of Public Safety currently has 1,891 sworn personnel, but the police union asserts that 2,500 officers are needed.

FOP Lodge 9 President Brian Steel emphasized the urgency, stating, "As of last pay period, we lost 124 due to separation already this year. So we are still not keeping up with the numbers."

Just Thursday, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther presented his proposed $1.26 billion operating budget for the next year, with a substantial 70%—nearly $852 million—allocated to public safety. This includes funding for two police recruit classes and one fire class, adding up to 120 new police officers and 45 new firefighters.

"The next graduating class will be one of the largest we've had in the department's history and certainly the largest since the pandemic," Ginther said. "So we want to continue to add officers as we have resources available."
